There’s really no way to put this gently: The 25-year-old BMW M5 in front of you is for sale for $150,000. That’s a lot of money for any car from the 1990s, and if you didn’t know the history of the M5 Touring you might be tempted to turn your nose up and walk away. But once you realize that the already extremely rare E34 M5 Touring never made its way to the States, this car’s asking price may not seem so extreme.
Just 891 were made—that means there are fewer of these running around than there are million-dollar Porsche 918 Spyders. Enthusiast Auto Group, the sellers of this particular M5, note that this example is two-owner car painted in Santorini Blue—one of only two in this color—and has 96,542 miles on the clock.
The 1995 (E34) M5 is powered by a 3.8-liter straight-six that made 311 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque when new. This M5 Touring is probably making a fair bit more, since it was modified during a “no expense spared” engine restoration with a new performance camshaft, exhaust, and a bunch of new internals including main bearings. Power is sent rearward through an Escort ZR4 Laser shifter. It’s not stock, but it sure seems like a performer.
The interior is mostly white leather, but you’ll no doubt notice the blue leather on all of the pillars, across the dashboard, and the blue suede headliner and blue suede lining in the cargo area. Even the contrasting stitching on the steering wheel and the piping in the seats has been color-matched to the Santorini Blue exterior.
It is the perfect confluence of high performance and utility, all in a beautifully nostalgic but tastefully modified package, and it can be yours for the price of a new Porsche Panamera Turbo. For the ultimate BMW fan, it might not be a hard call.
